Heavy Metal Group Learns XRF

Just an FYI, we aren’t talking about music here, we are talking about detecting heavy metals. But you knew that, right?

So here is the update from the “Heavy Metals” or XRF group, written by rising senior Kialee Bowles:

Our first week working on this project was primarily spent learning about the

(XRF), as well as the theory behind it. We also learned how to break down a complex, scholarly article into different pieces in order to understand the information better. After reading many of these articles regarding experiments similar to ours, we began to brainstorm and came up with ideas for different items and products that we would like to test.

On Monday, we had a guest speaker, Candice Graf, who works for the city of Davenport. She discussed in great detail the process of testing homes and commercial buildings where there have been reported cases of lead poisoning. We had a brief opportunity to try out the city’s own portable XRF, making us all very anxious to get our own next week and get started testing!!
